The AEGD Columbus Program is sponsored by CDI and is fully accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA). AEGD Columbus, located in Mount Carmel Hospital, is a two-year program for dental residents to further develop advanced dental techniques initially taught during undergraduate programs.
The Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency provides in-depth experience of a wealth of advanced dental procedures. The program’s focus on complex cases ensures an unmatched and unique perspective into a fully functioning future practice.
The completion of the AEGD Columbus program will fully prepare doctors to meet the demands and complexities of modern dentistry.
The AEGD Columbus program accepts 12 residents per year.
The AEGD Columbus Program at the Cleveland Dental Institute accepts both U.S. grads and foreign trained dentists.

AEGD Columbus Advanced Dentistry Program Goals
The Columbus AEGD program emphasizes the advanced skills needed to properly diagnose, plan, and treat patients, including those with complicated medical history, special needs, and a vast array of specific dental requirements.

Columbus residents will train in all aspects of modern dental procedures, leveraging the lastest high-tech equipment and techniques. These include, but aren’t limited to, clinical microscope, 3D imaging and CEREC tech. Completion of this program satisfies the Certification in IV Sedation requirement. The AEGD Columbus program is multi-disciplinary, and residents will have the opportunity to work alongside faculty experts in all disciplines of practice, including rotation through the Operating Room and Internal Medicine departments at CDI Columbus.

The didactic portion of the program includes radiology, pathology, implant dentistry, oral surgery, I.V. Sedation in Ohio, TMJ disorders, and CAD CAM Technologies.

The AEGD Columbus program is a two-year mandatory program. The first year will emphasize the introduction to comprehensive dental care, treatment planning, and quality care in a setting that is closely supervised. The second year allows the resident the opportunity to explore advanced procedures and complex cases, also under close profressional supervision. Upon successful completion of the second year, the graduate will receive a Certificate of Completion.

Examples of treatment performed in The Advanced Education in General Dentistry Columbus program include advanced bridge, crown, and aesthetic restorations, implant placement and restoration, endodontic treatment, periodontal treatment, oral surgery- both simple and complex, removable full and partial dentures, pedodontic care, radiology, and orthodontic case management.
Upon AEGD Columbus program completion, residents will be able to
Safely and effectively navigate the emergency, apprehensive, episodic, and comprehensive needs of dental patients.
Satisfy all necessary requirements for the Certification in IV Sedation.
Provide effective care for special needs patients, including indigent, medically-challenged, and developmentally-disabled patients, as well as those without access to regular dental care.
Apply the Principles of Professionalism and Ethics in all matters of their practice.
Value the importance of Continuing Dental Education and professional growth in their professional career trajectory.
Demonstrate effective management and leadership of dental personnel, with excellence in collaboration, team development and constructive assessment.
AEGD Columbus – Advanced Education General Dentistry Program Requirements
Information received by the program must contain the following information in order to be reviewed for consideration of an interview:
- ADEA PASS application
- 2 x 2 photo
- Three letters of recommendation
- Dental school transcripts
- Curriculum Vitae
- Personal statement
- Proof of graduation from an accredited dental school or its equivalent
- Appropriate academic performance demonstrated in transcripts of individual courses
- Grade Point Average and Class Rank
- NBDE Part 1 & 2 or INBDE Scores (if applicable)
- Letter of recommendation including an assessment of clinical and leadership skills
- Recommendations supporting ethical and professional behavior necessary to work in an advanced education program
- Demonstrated professional qualities, communication skills, and personal traits in the interview process
- Demonstrated qualities and abilities to function in a multidisciplinary healthcare environment
Each application is carefully reviewed. After review, qualified applicants will be invited for an interview.
Invited candidates will have a panel interview, and a bench exam to evaluate hand skills. The interviewers complete a standardized evaluation for each applicant.
Following the interviews, the admissions committee will review all applicants for admission.

The Commission on Dental Accreditation has accredited the program in general practice residency. However, accreditation of the program does not in itself constitute recognition of any dental specialty status.

AEGD Columbus Bench Test Preparatory Course
Five Day Courses (Tuesday – Saturday)
Workshop Objectives:
The workshop features didactic and hands-on sessions.
Operative dentistry
- Perform amalgam and composite preparations and restorations in the traditional mannequin labs.
- Class II amalgam restoration.
- Class II composite restoration.
- Restorations of composite preparations using various forms of matrix bands.
RCT
- Rubber dam application, anterior teeth access, cleaning, shaping and obturation, and Posterior teeth access, cleaning and shaping
Treatment planning
- Review simple and complex treatment planning, caries risk assessment, sequencing of treatment plan, presentation of plan, informed consent, and modifications to treatment plan.
Periodontal Scaling

Learn how to prepare, anesthetize and control bleeding of soft and hard tissue prior to the procedure.

Perform efficient root planning and scaling following CDCA guidelines.

Learn how to evaluate soft and hard tissue after completion of the procedure.

Selection of the ideal instruments to get reliable results.
Treatment planning
- Review simple and complex treatment planning, caries risk assessment, sequencing of treatment plan, presentation of plan, informed consent, and modifications to treatment plan.
Fixed Prosthodontics

Anterior Tooth Preparation for Metal-ceramic Crown (PFM)

Perform a preparation and fabricate a temporary restoration on a posterior tooth for a PFM restoration.

Perform a preparation and fabricate a temporary restoration on an anterior tooth for a full ceramic restoration.
Infection Control

Management of typodont in the simulation clinic with SDM infection control guidelines.

Restorations of composite preparations using various forms of matrix bands with emphasis on the use of sectional matrix.
