Course Overview

The CDI Bench Preparatory Course is designed for internationally trained dentists who are preparing for bench test examinations that may be required by General Practice Residency (GPR), Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD), and Advanced Standing dental programs in the United States.

This intensive, fast-track program focuses on strengthening clinical precision, procedural efficiency, and exam readiness through structured hands-on training. Over five consecutive days, participants receive a combination of didactic instruction and intensive simulation-based practice in a preclinical laboratory environment.

A strong emphasis is placed on individualized coaching. With a low faculty-to-candidate ratio, participants benefit from continuous supervision, real-time correction, and personalized feedback designed to refine technique, improve accuracy, and enhance speed under exam-like conditions.

Course Content

The program provides focused training across four core dental disciplines commonly assessed in bench examinations:

Operative Dentistry

Training includes didactic review and hands-on practice in Class II and Class III cavity preparations using caries-simulated typodont teeth. Emphasis is placed on proper outline form, depth control, and restorative principles.

Prosthodontics

Participants receive structured instruction and practical training in tooth preparation for full cast metal crowns, porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns, and all-ceramic crowns. Focus areas include occlusal reduction, axial reduction, and margin design on typodont models.

Endodontics

This module covers access cavity design, canal anatomy, cleaning, shaping, and obturation techniques. Training is performed on specialized endodontic typodont teeth as well as bench-mounted extracted teeth, covering both anterior and posterior teeth.

Periodontics

Instruction includes periodontal diagnosis and treatment principles, followed by hands-on training in probing techniques, scaling, and root planning using simulation models designed to replicate clinical calculus conditions.

Course Structure

Operative Dentistry

  • Foundational Concepts: principles of cavity design, caries detection, enamel integrity, and composite restoration.
  • Hands-on Training: faculty-guided preparation of Class II, Class III cavity preparations and composite restorations on caries simulated teeth.
  • Performance Feedback: continuous faculty evaluation to improve precision, consistency, and efficiency.

Prosthodontics

  • Foundational Concepts: crown preparation design, reduction guidelines, and restoration requirements.
  • Hands-on Training: simulated preparation of full-coverage crowns across different material types.
  • Performance Feedback: continuous faculty evaluation to improve precision, consistency, and efficiency.

Endodontics

  • Foundational Concepts: access design, canal morphology, and endodontic workflow principles.
  • Hands-on Training: performed on both plastic typodonts and bench-mounted extracted teeth:
    • Posterior teeth – rubber dam placement, access cavity preparation, cleaning, shaping, and obturation.
    • Anterior teeth – rubber dam placement, access cavity preparation, cleaning, shaping, and obturation.
  • Performance Feedback: continuous faculty evaluation to improve precision, consistency, and efficiency.

Periodontics

  • Foundational Concepts: periodontal assessment, disease recognition, and treatment planning.
  • Hands-on Training: probing, scaling, and root planning on simulated periodontal models.
  • Performance Feedback: continuous faculty evaluation to improve precision, consistency, and efficiency.
