Frequently Asked of the CDI Ohio Orthodontists
Below are the answers to the most common questions we receive.
Why are braces needed?
Dental braces are a temporary corrective treatment utilized to resolve ‘bad bites’ or malocclusion (teeth that are overly crowded or have come in crooked). Braces will fix your bite and will restore your smile to be beautiful and straight, but most importantly, will lead to a healthier mouth.
What happens if I don’t have my teeth straightened?
If malocclusion or bad-bites are not addressed, a patient is far more likely to suffer oral health problems later in life.
What oral health issues do braces help prevent?
CDI Ohio Orthodontists may recommend corrective dental braces to prevent the following long-term oral health problems:
-
- Tooth decay
- Gum disease
- Tooth loss
- Affected speech and/or chewing
- Abnormal wear to tooth enamel
- Jaw problems
What age should I consider braces?
Most orthodontic treatments begin between the ages of 8 and 14 after adult teeth have all developed, as this is when malocclusion and bad bites are most noticeable. However, CDI provides corrective treatment for adults of all ages as well. It’s never too late to start improving your smile AND your oral health.
Should I get traditional wire braces or an invisible aligner?
The most common dental braces are what most know as traditional wire braces, which are small brackets cemented to to each tooth that are connected by a thin metal wire. Your doctor will tighten the wires over time, so that your teeth and jawshift and realign over time.
Typically, traditional braces are cemented to the front of the teeth. However, our CDI Ohio Orthodontists can actually arrange for traditional braces to be behind your teeth.
If our patient would prefer not to have the traditional wire braces, there is an alternative, called Invisalign. With this treatment, your doctor will apply a transparent, nearly undetectable plastic form that is shaped for and worn over your teeth.
Invisible aligners are worn in two-week periods. After every two weeks, a new set of aligners is applied. Invisible aligners will move your teeth gradually into place for your perfect smile.
As every person, mouth, and case is different and unique, it is best to talk to your CDI Ohio Orthodontist about what you prefer and what will provide you the most effective results.
How long do I have to have braces/aligners?
Dental braces and aligners from CDI generally last 2 years or less. On average, CDI patients have their temporary braces or invisable aligners removed in less than two years. The amount of time can vary from patient-to-patient and severity of the corrective action needed. Ask your CDI Ohio Orthodontist about your estimated treatment duration.
